Art therapists use creative, arts-based techniques such as collage, drawing and painting to encourage self-expression, fun, self-awareness, healing and to discover inner thoughts.
The focus is on the process of making the art not on the finished product so you never need to be "good at art" to start.
Activities can range from mandalas, finger painting or clay sculptures.
Each art material can bring about a different feeling or emotion which helps tap into exploration of the concern you bring to the session.
If you need grounding (relaxing and bringing yourself to feel more regulated in the space) we can begin with activities such as taking long breaths or stretching.
Once you feel present, I like to do a 'check in' using a metaphor such as "I feel like I'm up a creek without a paddle" to access where your emotions are at, which will begin the process of exploring your current concern.
Art therapy involves paper, canvas or any art material that can be used as a base for artistic expression. It can either be self-directed or if you prefer I can guide you to an activity.
I will observe you as you make markings on paper and the session can include music in the background, talking as you create or even if you prefer, we can sit in silence. When you feel as if you are finished or near the end of the session, we can discuss any insight or feelings you may have discovered.
You may have feelings, thoughts or patterns of behaviour that you don't understand and need to express. Art therapy can help you by using movements of your body while creating 'bottom up' instead of thinking 'top down' which can lead to greater self-awareness and discovery.
Art therapy can help where words often can't. It can help you make sense of the world and gain new perspectives.
My approach to art therapy is based off building strong therapeutic relationships with clients built on safety, trust and fun.
Sessions last up to 60 minutes online or face to face. I provide the art supplies for you to explore. If you feel that you need more time to work on your art you can continue in our next session or between sessions.
